Motivational Interviewing Recovery Coach Style
Motivational Interviewing Recovery Coach Style
MI Statements as a Clinician vs. Coach/MI with Bias and Discovering & Managing your stuff1. Since MI is an evidence based practice and you are a trained professional recovery coach WHY are you not using it? 2. If I close my eyes and you sound like a sponsor or someone chairing a meeting, or if you sound like a therapist that constantly says 'I can see how you feel that way'-why are you not using your unique art?3. The true art of questions: In counseling, we call this 'leading' and we use the 'recipient' role to help us as coaches. Practice more objective, non judgemental, curious questions that are intentional and lead the person to their own best self not to lead you into a story about how you lecture the way to recover.4. Last, but not least, How to use MI to discover and manage your own biases. Most common-Moderation based Recovery or anything 'harm reduction', medication & recovery, leading people to your own path by never including resources from anything else, or outwardly discussing that abstinence=recovery.
Objectives
Here are some common talking points:1. WHAT are you evoking? WHY?2. Self Disclosure & MI: WAIT-Are YOU talking when you did not at least use MI first?3. Self Disclosure, Storytelling and MI: How much and how often are YOU stretching yourself? Have you told that same rock bottom story for 15 years? Do you know how to change it up? If so, why aren't you?
