Depth of Knowledge ~ A way to Increase Rigor and Challenge for English Learners in the Classroom
Depth of Knowledge ~ A way to Increase Rigor and Challenge for English Learners in the Classroom
Join EL teachers and coordinators as we use a new lens to guide the creation of more cognitively engaging and challenging tasks for our ELs. At the heart of CCSS is the need to increase the level of rigor in our classrooms for all students. This can be perceived as a challenging task by teachers of English Learners. Depth of Knowledge (DOK) offers a common language to understand "rigor," or cognitive demand, in assessments, as well as curricular units, lessons, and tasks. Norman Webb’s Depth-of-Knowledge (DOK) schema has become one of the key tools educators can employ to analyze the cognitive demand (complexity) intended by the standards. Depth of Knowledge represents the comparison of the cognitive demand of the Common Core Standards and the cognitive demand of the Assessments given to determine their mastery.Using a Depth of Knowledge (DOK) framework enables us to thoughtfully consider the complexity of mental processing that must occur to answer a question, perform a task, or generate a product. DOK levels describe four different and deeper ways a student might interact with content. This is particularly important for teachers when differentiating instruction for ELsParticipants will receive an exciting new tool which will assist in increasing rigor and aligning assessments to SBAC expectations and therefore increase academic achievement of ELs.
Objectives
Objectives: • Participants will understand how rigor and depth of knowledge are critical concepts when planning lessons that are aligned to CCSS• Participants will understand how the previous objective is essential when planning lessons / differentiation for ELs
