The Choices Approach: Engaging students in inquiry and discussion about International Issues
This professional learning opportunity coaches teachers on how to use the Choices program to promote inquiry and student discourse in the classroom. The Choices materials incorporate the latest scholarship from Brown University and beyond to draw connections between historical events and contemporary international issues. In each unit, a central activity challenges students to consider multiple viewpoints on a contested issue. Students examine the historical, cultural, and political background of the issue to prepare a coherent presentation. Follow-up discussion demands analysis, and evaluation of conflicting values, interests, and priorities. Ultimately, students are expected to formulate persuasive arguments and express their own views. Additionally, this workshop will make connections to the Inquiry Arc, as described in the new CT Social Studies Frameworks.
Objectives
As a result of this workshop participants will: •Be immersed in the Choices Program’s award-winning resources and approach to teaching about contested international Issues;•Examine two Choices units •Participate in lesson activities from Choices units, modeling how to use them in the classroom.•Explore how Choices materials are aligned with the Common Core standards and the new CT Social Studies Framework
