An Introduction to Connecticut Invention Convention and Invention Dimension
The Connecticut Invention Convention (CIC) and CREC’s Institute of Teaching and Learning are working collaboratively to improve science engagement through instructional innovation and practice to support implementing the Next Generation Science Standards. The new standards require that students operate at the intersection of science practice, content, and connection. This requires coherent and rigorous instruction and curriculum, which will result in students being able to acquire and apply scientific knowledge to unique situations. They will also think and reason scientifically. To maximize instructional time and student learning in science, the CIC is one way to bundle several grade-level performance expectations included in the Next Generation Science Standards. This full-day workshop will explain how the CIC can support the implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards in a meaningful and exciting way for kindergarten through grade 12 students.
Objectives
Participants will:1) Engage in activities that will help them understand the invention process, how it aligns with the NGSS standards and how it will enable students to become better learners and succeed in school and their careers beyond. 2) Review the variety of ways a CIC program can be implemented and conducted in a classroom, school, or district to address the NGSS Performance Expectations. 3) Learn how the CIC organization can help and support teachers as they teach CIC materials. 4) Understand the CIC requirements, practices, and schedule for local school, regional, and final events.
