Teaching and Learning in 3D: An Orientation to the Next Generation Science Standards
This three part workshop will orient the science teachers and school leaders to the changes associated with the vision of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The vision of the NGSS is to intertwine the three dimensions of the standards (disciplinary core ideas, crosscutting concepts and the science and engineering practices) in a way that students are engaged in science and can transfer learning and problem solving skills to the real world. This new model of science education requires modification to current practices in curriculum writing, pedagogy, and assessment practices. This three part workshop will provide an overview of these modifications and will provide some tools and strategies for implementation. Participants will receive hands-on experience exploring the key shifts in science curriculum, instruction, and assessment in order to cultivate the three dimensions of the Next Generation Science Standards in their schools.
