The Blueprint: Distinguishing Between Language Difference and Disability of English Learners
Two-Day Workshop, Includes Workbook
This session will help educators to support English Learners (EL) who are struggling by reviewing the legal processes for EL identification, expanding understanding of second language acquisition and culturally-responsive practices, and examining national, state, and district-level EL data and data on ELs with disabilities.
Objectives
On day one participants will examine ELs participation in the Scientific Research-Based Interventions (SRBI) process and the role of comprehensive evaluation when determining a disability. Participants will inspect Tier I, Tier II, and Tier III instruction and intervention for ELs, as well as identify and define the components of a comprehensive evaluation process. On day two participants will examine what individualized, specially-designed instruction looks like for ELs with disabilities. A decision-making framework for a continuum of services will be explored, including individual and team roles and responsibilities in the implementation and monitoring of special education services for ELs with disabilities.
