Engaging Students in Discourse and Deliberative Dialogue
For teachers of grades 4-12
Through this workshop participants will both learn and practice engaging strategies for promoting student discourse and deliberative dialogue in the classroom. The CT Core standards ask students across the content areas and grade levels to have regular practice with their peers using protocols to promote speaking and listening skills, as these skills are important for their success in school and beyond. These skills help students to speak from evidence, address their peers in structured, productive ways, and ultimately help them to form informed arguments, identify counterclaims, and come to a consensus when appropriate.
Objectives
Participants will understand the importance of student discourse to promote understanding, analysis, and synthesis of content, as well as civic engagement. Participants will engage in and understand a series of strategies for discussion and deliberative dialogue to take back to their classroom.
