Connecticut State Department of Education-NGSS Curriculum Unit Development Institute

The State of Connecticut Department of Education has collaborated with the Connecticut Science Center, CREC, and LEARN to create: Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Curriculum Unit Development Institute (CUDI). During the institute participants will:•experience the NGSS conceptual shifts as they investigate the architecture of the standards•engage in the curricular design process following a research-based protocol•generate a NGSS-aligned sample unit that is anchored in a phenomenon and is peer reviewed•develop learning sequences that are three dimensional and coherent.The intended audience for CUDI includes members of district or school science curriculum development teams; i.e., teachers, coaches, coordinators, and administrators. Teams of educators from a district are encouraged to attend.At the end of this 5-day institute, participants will have access to the sample units developed collaboratively in the institute for use or modification by their districts.

Objectives
Participants will:•experience the NGSS conceptual shifts as they investigate the architecture of the standards•engage in the curricular design process following a research-based protocol•generate a NGSS-aligned sample unit that is anchored in a phenomenon and is peer reviewed; and develop learning sequences that are three dimensional and coherent.In addition, participants will leave with the skills and tools needed to develop additional NGSS units. All units developed during the institute will be shared with the state for vetting and potential statewide sharing.

Notes

Registrants should be familiar with the Next Generation Science Standards and have attended NGSS aligned trainings such as:•NGSX•a Teacher Quality Partnership PD with an NGSS focus•at least the first four modules of the Next-Gen Science CT online course in a PLC•CREC’s Teaching and Learning in 3D, Administrator’s Guide to Implementing NGSS, or district level NGSS training.
