Trauma: Effects on the Brain and Strategies for Learning
This professional development workshop will explore the distinctions between transient trauma and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder on the ability to learn. While both conditions create immediate learning difficulties PTSD can have ongoing effects that impair executive functioning over time and the emotional ability to engage in a classroom setting. Fortunately, there are teaching strategies as well as environmental accommodations that can help these students to focus on learning and develop comfort in our Adult Education programs.
Objectives
Participants will develop an appreciation of the differences between the two disorders. They will come away with concrete strategies that can help students who have been exposed to trauma access their higher-level thinking skills, essential for success in Adult Education, and tolerate our classroom environments.
