Teachers’ Orientation to the Next Generation Science Standards
This workshop will introduce K-12 classroom teachers of science to changes in science education envisioned by the State’s adoption of the Next Generation Science Standards. The standards intertwine three dimensions – core ideas, crosscutting concepts, and science and engineering practices – to engage students in science and transfer learning and problem solving skills to the real world. This will require modifications in our lesson planning, instruction, and assessment practices. Participants will learn the rationale for this reform effort, develop an understanding of the structure of the Next Generation Science Standards, and receive hands-on experience exploring key shifts in science instruction. Participants will receive suggested professional development resources, criteria for selecting unit-based phenomena, resources for writing lesson objectives, and other tools for beginning to incorporate all three dimensions into classroom practice.
