Session Title: What’s the Big Idea?: Building Proportional Reasoning Across the Levels
Announcing the return of deep, math content-specific sessions with a new Connecticut Adult Numeracy and Mathematics Institute (CANMI)! • Math is not about steps, tricks, and mnemonics. Big Ideas, those ideas central to learning math which link together several mathematical understandings, are the foundation of our content knowledge, teaching practice, and curriculum. Connecting our knowledge to a relatively few Big Ideas is what leads us to develop a deep understanding of mathematics. Come explore the progression of proportional reasoning. You’ll leave with a deeper understanding and ideas for your classroom.
Objectives
Distinguish between additive and multiplicative reasoning. Understand proportion as a relationship between two relationships. Identify several ways to solve proportions other than cross-products. Connect proportional reasoning to a variety of math content
