Effective Use Of The Connecticut Curriculum Maps
Translating CT's K-12 World Language Performance Standards Into Objectives And Classroom Practice
This workshop is designed to help World Language teachers and curriculum developers translate Connecticut's K-12 World Languages performance standards into objectives and classroom practice, as well as understand the elements in the Trace Maps that are designed to lead students toward the attainment of ACTFL's 5 C's (Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities). Participants will learn how to create 21st Century language learning opportunities beyond the classroom, that focus on the three communicative modes: Interpretive, Interpersonal and Presentational, that will enhance students' college- and career-readiness.
Objectives
World Languages instructors will learn to use backward design to create thematic units based on CT’s WL learning standards and higher-order thinking skills, as well as create learning situations for K-12 World Language learners to build their capacity to use the targeted language spontaneously in real-life situations. Participants will identify essential WL content knowledge and skills that students should know and be able to do to communicate and understand people and cultures from other countries. Participants will review various performance tasks, performance rubrics, and assessments, and will leave with a "roadmap"/"framework" to help guide their learners to develop competence to communicate effectively and interact with cultural understanding.
