Guiding K-12 Learners Through Their World Language Journeys
The World Languages discipline is much broader than just learning a second or third language. Learning a world language involves experiencing and knowing about the cultures of those who use it, in addition to knowing how to listen to, speak, read, and write the language. This workshop emphasizes the integration of culture with the teaching of language skills through centers-based learning. Participants will learn how to offer students authentic representations of culture and the opportunities to experience and learn about new ways of thinking and doing, believing and communicating in the target language.
Objectives
In this workshop, World Language instructors will learn methods in modeling and integrating correct target language use as they instruct, structure, facilitate, and guide target language learners through the learning process of language acquisition. Participants will learn how to structure instructional time and classroom space to promote target language practice. Additionally, participants will: 1) learn how to facilitate and apply methods for the movement and active participation of students; 2) learn how to facilitate centers-based learning and how to guide students' communication with each other; and 3) review various performance tasks, performance rubrics, and assessments. Participants will leave with a “roadmap”/”framework” that will assist them in guiding their WL learners to develop competence in communicating effectively and interacting with cultural understanding.
