3rd Annual Social Justice and Equity Symposium
The 3rd Annual Social Justice and Equity Symposium will focus on the development, implementation, and maintenance of infrastructure to support school/parent and family engagement. Featured Speaker, Dr. Sebastian Cherng, Assistant Professor at New York University, will utilize a social justice lens to discuss research and information to support educators' approaches to family participation in their children's education. Jill Wnuk, principal at Two Rivers Middle School, will share her school's transformative journey utilizing a systemic approach to addressing racial equity, social justice and cultural responsiveness in their school community. The Two Rivers work illustrates the centrality of addressing parental engagement thoughtfully, considerate of individual/group identity and institutional systems. Tamika Thurston, Youth and Family Program Service Specialist at CREC, will provide guidance and information on deliberate steps to relationship building, applicable to any parental engagement approach but specifically meaningful for maintaining relationships of integrity.
Objectives
The main objective of the symposium is to provide resources and evidence needed to take informed action to educators who are responsible for delivering culturally responsive education and supporting socially just experiences for all students.
