Addressing Social Communication and Play
In this workshop, participants will learn how social communication and play skills in young children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are widely acknowledged, and affect the ability of these children to achieve academic success and build social relationships with adults and peers. It is important to address these skills early; however, preschool intervention teams often struggle to find effective and collaborative ways to improve these key skills in young children with ASD.
Objectives
- Explain to others how working on social-communication and play goals can contribute to improvements in broader outcomes for preschoolers with ASD. - Use developmental sequences to choose appropriate, individualized social-communication and play goals, and apply simple decision rules to determine when to modify the goals. - Select evidence-based intervention strategies adapted to behavior and learning patterns common among young children with ASD.
