Sessions will encourage meaningful collegial conversations; inspire collaborative problem solving and innovative thinking; and result in resources for immediate classroom application. Participants will Discuss the significance of equity in the classroom, reflect on the components that make up their own identity and how it is reflected within the classroom, analyze research based teaching strategies, engage in role play activities. Participants will view a model of a working grade-level academic and behavioral incentive program developed to motivate students. This session will provide opportunities for participants to engage in discussion about topics or themes in which their students have an interest, and discuss/view strategies and ideas for connecting more to students through pop culture to increase academic performance, build teamwork and collaboration and strengthen the community in the classroom focused around the CREC Essential Skills., the interests of the students as well as improving the teamwork, collaboration and positive support of one another in the classroom. CREC Admin ONLY - Leading in the Age of NGSS
Gather with leadership colleagues from other schools to dive into the instructional changes that come with the shift to Next Generation Science Standards. The focus will be on the specific focus practices for the coming school year. Leaders will experience mini phenomena to see how these foundational experiences level the playing field for students for more equitable instructional opportunities, through for truly three-dimensional learning experiences. Principals will wear their student, teacher, and administrator hats throughout the session to explore the instructional practices and learning experiences related to the NGSS. This session is open to all school leaders, but will be geared for administrators and observers. During the session, participants will: Look at curriculum documents to understand how they inform classroom instruction. Consider best practices for supporting teachers in their transition to new methods of science instruction, and how to apply the methods to other content areas. Reflect on feedback methods for classroom observations.

Participants will prepare for their first units of readers and writers workshop. They will discuss how the workshop model can be used effectively, how technology can support their mini lesson and how to add in CCSS standards. T206: Differentiating Phonics Instruction with FUNdations

Direct, explicit phonics instruction is required in order for students to become readers. T207: Creating Calm: Strategies to Prevent Challenging Behavior in the Classroom
Audience: Second Year Teachers, All Grades Focus: All subjects This session will address the importance of creating calm environments to prevent or minimize challenging behavior. We will discuss the basic principles of behavior in order to understand the reasons that students may engage in problem behavior. Strategies to support appropriate behaviors, including simple environmental modifications will be shared. Participants will learn: • Risk and resilience factors that influence student behavior • Identifying and eliminating common behavior triggers • Teaching behavioral expectations • The role of mindfulness and other stress reduction techniques to support classroom calm • Simple techniques for strengthening teacher/student relationships to support positive behavior As a result of attending this workshop, participants will: • understand and apply effective basic principles of behavior management. • prevent many problem behaviors by establishing and pre-teaching behavioral expectations, identifying and eliminating classroom behavioral triggers, and using selected techniques to promote stress management, self-regulation and positive student-teacher connections. REQUIRED for preschool teachers entering their first year at CREC. Audience: First Year Teachers, Preschool Focus: English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Special Education, Classroom/Behavior Management This session is designed to support first year Pre-Kindergarten teachers as they start their career at CREC. Participants will understand the components of a balanced Pre-Kindergarten program. They will understand how to integrate the ELDS into a play-based learning environment that supports each student as an individual learner. Participants will have an understanding of CREC Pre-Kindergarten resources, including the scope and sequence, curriculum documents, and assessment documents. Participants will engage in a collaborative work session that allows time for them to develop an overview of learning objectives for the first week of school. As a result of the learning in this session, teachers will have an understanding of the play-based approach through which we teach content in Pre-Kindergarten. T300: Google For The Beginner
Audience: Second Year Teachers, 3+ Years Teachers, All Grades Focus: English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Special Education, Foreign Language, The Arts, Physical Education & Health This session is designed to give teachers a basic understanding of the use of the Google platform. Participants will learn about file management, Google Document functions, Google Draw, Google Slides and Google Forms. Participants will be creating folders for their work and for student work. We will be creating Google Docs and using all of the functions of the Docs app. We will be using Google Draw to create simple images as the students in our classes may be doing. We will use Google Slides to create a simple presentation with animations and transitions. We will create a simple Google Form and share it with the group. As a result of their learning, teachers will understand/know/be able to better integrate the Google platform into their everyday teaching at any grade level. They will be more comfortable with the use of the platform since this is what our students will be using in our schools and in their personal lives. T304: Moving Matters
Audience: Second Year Teachers, 3+ Years Teachers, Open to anyone working with Pre K through Grade 5, Preschool, Kindergarten-Grade 2, Grades 3-5 Focus: Physical Education & Health This session is designed to share how to use simple yoga stretches and breathing techniques throughout the class period or day can enhance focus and concentration, ease anxiety and create a sense of connectedness in your classroom. Students (of all ages) are sedentary for longer and longer stretches of time which can have a negative impact on academic achievement as well as overall health. In addition, stress, which is common among children and teens, makes it difficult to focus and concentrate. Being and relaxed in mind and body is a prerequisite to learning. Come learn how to incorporate physical breaks without sacrificing valuable instructional time. Participants will: •Discuss the challenges associated with students being too sedentary during the school day Explore the connection between learning readiness and feeling safe and comfortable in body and mind •Learn simple breathing exercises and yoga stretches that can be easily integrated throughout the day without any special equipment, space or training •Have fun and reduce stress for both students and teachers! T305: Strategies to Enhance Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension Instruction
Audience: Second Year Teachers, 3+ Years Teachers, Grades 3-5 Focus: English Language Arts, Science, Social Studies This session is designed to inform and model a variety of strategies to promote student word-consciousness and comprehension of complex texts. Participants will be engaged in different approaches to teaching vocabulary to diverse learners, as well as exploring research-based best practices for improving reading comprehension in trans disciplinary learning. As a result of their learning, teachers will be able to access resources and create templates for differentiating instruction for the direct teaching of new vocabulary and comprehending of fiction and nonfiction texts. Bring laptop or iPad to access resources. Please bring and prepare to discuss a vocabulary and/or comprehension strategy to share with peers that has proved useful in your teaching.

T306: Creating Calm: Strategies to Prevent Challenging Behavior in the Classroom
Audience: Second Year Teachers, All Grades Focus: All subjects This session will address the importance of creating calm environments to prevent or minimize challenging behavior. We will discuss the basic principles of behavior in order to understand the reasons that students may engage in problem behavior. Strategies to support appropriate behaviors, including simple environmental modifications will be shared. Participants will learn: •Risk and resilience factors that influence student behavior •Identifying and eliminating common behavior triggers •Teaching behavioral expectations •The role of mindfulness and other stress reduction techniques to support classroom calm •Simple techniques for strengthening teacher/student relationships to support positive behavior As a result of attending this workshop, participants will: •understand and apply effective basic principles of behavior management. •prevent many problem behaviors by establishing and pre-teaching behavioral expectations, identifying and eliminating classroom behavioral triggers, and using selected techniques to promote stress management, self-regulation and positive student-teacher connections.
