Open Choice Leadership Institute
Critical Consciousness: Key to Student Achievement
This three day, interactive workshop is designed for administrators and educators who educate students enrolled in their suburban school districts via the Hartford Region Open Choice program. This professional learning opportunity is designed to be attended by school district teams.• Learn about the role implicit bias plays in educator expectations of black and brown student performance and behavior, along with strategies to counteract implicit bias • Work as a team to identify institutional challenges negatively impacting students of color, select a goal or two within your school/district improvement plan and develop an action plan. • Engage in a discussion with a panel of Open Choice parents and alumni, who will describe their experiences in suburban school districts and offer recommendations• Identify the values, behaviors, policies, and practices within your schools and which stage they reflect within the cultural proficiency continuum • Discuss racial equity within schools and existing barriers at the individual, institutional and systemic levels, as well as strategies to address them• Hartford parent panel discusses their experiences and that of their children within suburban school districts • Learn more about the Open Choice program and resources available to your district• Network with educators from other suburban school districts and generate strategies to address the opportunity gap
