Ways to Productively Address Hurtful, Biased Comments or Actions in School
As teachers, school administrators, parents, grandparents, guardians, whatever role we play in a child’s life, we need to teach our children what to do/say when a disrespectful incident takes place related to another person’s race, ethnicity, religion, ability or another ism. That’s not always easy to do, especially with young children. Not easy, but possible. Participants will learn ways to speak with elementary school-aged children about discriminatory comments and behavior and help them know what to do or say, if and when that is appropriate. The presenter also will provide scenarios for teachers/parents to practice modeling for children ways to be an ally and ways to speak up against prejudiced comments and discriminatory acts.
