Social Emotional Learning through Yoga and Mindfulness
CASEL, the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning identifies self-awareness and self-management as two important competencies on the Social and Emotional Learning “wheel”. But how can we teach these important skills? Mindfulness - awareness of the present moment with acceptance -and yoga – mindful movement - can help students become aware of and understand their emotions, thoughts, and bodily sensations. This can have a positive impact on behavior, stress levels, relationships and the ability to focus and concentrate.In this workshop participants will: •Discuss how integrating yoga and mindfulness aligns with CASEL’s Social and Emotional Learning competencies •Review case studies and research supporting this work •Learn basic yoga and mindfulness techniques appropriate for a school/classroom environment
