Revisiting Beginning of the Year Structures, Rituals ad Routines: Building Reading Communities 3-5
This start-of-the-year day offers you a chance to think about skills, habits and literacy learning communities to kick-off your year with engaging curriculum. The day will begin with a discussion of the importance of immersing students in what it is to live like a reader. The instructor will provide mindful mini lessons that stretch beyond revisiting the annual laundry list of what good readers do and delve deep into setting up an engaging reading community where readers set goals, stamina and volume in reading. Also included is small group instruction, one-on-one-conferring, and building conversations around text, both in partnerships and book clubs. In the afternoon teachers will build conversations on classroom libraries, ensuring students have access to high-interest texts and the benefits of 1) author studies 2) series books and 3) building teaching repertoire in and around genres. Lastly the instructor will share some of her favorite new mentor texts for units of study in reading.

Things to know -

·   Workshop registration does not include breakfast or lunch. Please feel free to bring your own food and beverage or visit the CREC Central Café (111 Charter Oak Ave.) which offers a variety of breakfast and lunch options with daily specials.

·   Bring a refillable water bottle and/or beverage.

·   Bring a laptop or other electronic device (some workshops require only laptop) for note taking and access to online resources.

·   Please arrive 10 minutes prior to the start of the workshop.

·   Sometimes workshop room temperatures can vary so we suggest you dress in layers.

·   Please check the CREC website or your local TV station for any delay/closing information.
