FOR CREC STAFF ONLY: Please arrive at 7:30 AM to register on-site. All CREC teachers are welcome to attend this annual event! Sessions will encourage meaningful collegial conversations; inspire collaborative problem solving and innovative thinking; and result in resources for immediate classroom application. Sessions begin promptly at 8:30 AM on Tuesday, August 20. Registration opens at 7:30 AM. Breakfast and lunch are provided.

Participants will interact with the four primary Drive components - Docs, Sheets, Slides and Forms. Participants will be coached on how to organize a GoogleDrive, how to send and share, and how to assign a GoogleDrive Assignment to students! Teachers will have a 24/7 accessible, organized Drive in which they can upload files, share Docs with peers, input data into Sheets, gather information with Forms, set assignments in Schoology with GoogleDrive, and most importantly, be comfortable using this incredible technology! T201: SPIRE Reading Program
Audience: Second Year Teachers, 3+ Years Teachers, Special Education Teachers (K-12), Focus: Special Education, This sessions is designed to introduce special education teachers to SPIRE (Specialized Program Individualizing Reading Excellence) in order appropriately plan for small group reading instruction. Participants will engage in a workshop focused on the ten step lesson plan for introducing and reinforcing a specific concept as well as the scope and sequence of the program; explore the materials and activities found within the program; learn how to place students within the program. As a result of the their learning, teachers will be able to appropriately and effectively plan reading instruction for targeted reading groups using SPIRE. Please bring laptops.

T203: Emotion Based Teaching for Student Engagement
Audience: Second Year Teachers, 3+ Years Teachers, All Grades, Focus: English Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Special Education, The Arts, This session is designed to introduce educators to the practice of creating and implementing affective lessons and their subsequent effect on student engagement, classroom culture and management. Participants will participate in modeled lessons designed specifically to elicit emotional connection to academic content and to promote discussion on topics such as equity, stereotypes, and rich analysis of topics. As a result of this learning, participants will create and safely facilitate lessons that increase students' emotional engagement in the content as well as promote and foster empathy. T204: Module 1: Orientation to the Fountas & Pinnell Continuum of Literacy Learning
Audience: Second Year Teachers, 3+ Years Teachers, Grades 3-8, Focus: English Language Arts, This is the first (introductory) & second of four modules developed to provide a road map to specific learning targets within specific areas of literacy by grade based on the The Continuum of Literacy Learning content. This session will begin with Module One, which is the overview of the entire Continuum resource, including the definitions & descriptions of each of the literacy instruction contexts. Part two of this session, Interactive Read-Aloud & Literature Discussion will provide a clear explanation of this method of literacy instruction, along with an exploration of this section of the Continuum. The means of utilizing this resource to improve literacy instruction will be presented, along with specific examples of student work and learning goals for specific focus areas. This series of webinars complements the Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment used district-wide. Participants will understand the strategic actions & how they relate to students' literacy processing & to the reading process. Participants will have a better understanding for how to best utilize the Continuum of Learning to provide instruction tailored to their students' needs. T205: Phonemic Awareness and phonics instruction using the Heggerty Flip Chart
Audience: Second Year Teachers, Preschool, Kindergarten-Grade 2, Focus: English Language Arts, This session is designed to provide a method for teaching systematic and explicit phonemic awareness and phonics instruction using the Heggerty Flip Chart as well as other resources. Participants will watch videos of explicit phonemic awareness and phonics instruction as well as practice these activities with others. As a result of their learning, teachers will understand how to teach phonemic and phonics throughout the day and integrate these specific activities into shared and interactive reading, mini lessons, guided reading and Fundations. T301: Inquiry- Driven Lesson Planning Using the 5E Instructional Model Screen reader support enabled.
Audience: Second Year Teachers, 3+ Years Teachers, All Grades, Focus: English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Special Education, Foreign Language, This session is designed to increase student engagement and collaboration in the classroom through purposeful learning sequences. Participants will work through the inquiry process using the 5E instructional model. They will learn how to create a learning sequence through the 5E instructional model and understand how this model drives the inquiry process. Participants will be able to see how it is currently applied in a classroom and how it directly impacts student learning and engagement. Participants will be able to utilize a template to plan their own lessons using the model. As a result of their learning, teachers will be able to walk away with a learning sequence or a series of lessons that are coherent and flows into a unit. Audience: Second Year Teachers, 3+ Years Teachers, Grades 3-8, Focus: English Language Arts, This session includes modules four & nine of the series--Fountas & Pinnell"s Literacy Continuum. Although all four modules are suggested, the first two are NOT prerequisites to these sessions (each module may stand alone). The modules were developed to provide a road map to specific learning targets within specific areas of literacy by grade based on the The Continuum of Literacy Learning content. Module Four is Writing About Reading. This workshop will provide tools to support student writing while responding a variety of types of reading selections. Writing about reading is separate from writing as the focus addresses how to respond to a range of selections read verses the writing process. Module Nine, The Guided Reading Continuum will be explored along with an overview of the guided reading teaching method, the demands of texts on readers, book introductions, & making observations & analyzing reading behaviors. The means of utilizing this resource to improve literacy instruction will be presented, along with specific examples of student work and learning goals for specific focus areas. T303: Cognitively Guided Instruction: A Deeper Dive into Student Work
Audience: Second Year Teachers, 3+ Years Teachers, Kindergarten-Grade 2, Grades 3-5, Focus: Math, This session will look more closely at the Cognitively Guided instruction by looking at student work and how one can adjust their instruction based on this work. Teachers will breifly review the Cognitvely Guided Instruction model. Teachers will look at various mathematical models and problem solving strategies for CGI problems. Teachers will then look at student work and discuss how to adjust instruction in order to increase student use of more sophisticated methods and problem solving methods. T304: Using Data to Drive PPT Decisions
Audience: Second Year Teachers, 3+ Years Teachers, All Grades, Focsu: Special Education, This session is designed to impress upon Special Education Teachers the importance of collecting and presenting relevant data at planning and placement team meetings to help the team make informed decisions regarding student supports. Participants will be shown a variety of data collection instruments, techniques, and results and learn how this data can inform and drive PPT decisions. Participants will also be given a variety of data samples to review with fellow special education teachers to discuss if any relevant data is missing that would be beneficial to add in making more informed PPT decisions. As a result of this session, teachers will learn the importance of collecting data to drive PPT decisions, become familiar with data collection instruments and strategies, and learn when additional data may be needed to provide the best possible support for their students and to meet their students’ needs. T305: Classroom Management Essentials
Audience: Second Year Teachers, 3+ Years Teachers, Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8, Focus: Classroom Environment, This session is designed to increase the teacher's awareness of how to establish effective classroom routines and techniques to improve the overall management of the elementary or middle school classroom. Throughout the workshop, various management techniques and routines will be modeled for the participants and in turn the participants will have an opportunity to practice and experience these techniques with small groups. The participants will also have an opportunity to plan how they will use these new techniques in their classrooms. As a result of their learning, teachers will understand how management techniques and routines should be utilized in order to maximize student engagement. During the second half of the session, teachers will have an opportunity to mindfully plan the implementation of these new techniques for use in the first week of school. Participants will observe and actively participate in productive talk circles; discuss target language strategies and questioning techniques, and where they apply in NGSS or common core standards; and actively participate in collaborative planning with fellow teachers to address lessons where language can increase. As a result of their learning participants will utilize productive talk and questioning strategies in their own classroom across content areas in order to achieve maximum communication. W300: Differentiating Phonics INstruction in FUNdations

Audience: Second Year Teachers, 3+ Years Teachers, Kindergarten-Grade 5, Focus: English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, This session is designed to help new teachers become familiar with writing report cards (focusing on the comments) using PowerTeacher Pro and conducting effective parent-teacher conferences in order to build strong home-school relationships with families. Participants will observe exemplar report card comments and practice writing comments that focus on individual strengths and areas that need improvement (setting goals). Teachers will also participate in mock conferences. As a result of their learning, teachers will understand that report card comments need to be individualized by focusing on each child's strengths but also include student goals (areas of improvement) for the next term. Teachers will be provided handouts that can be used during parent-teacher conferences. Tony Ferraiolo, Certified Life Coach, Trainer, and Author will provide an engaging conversation focused on supporting all of our transgender students. An overview of GLSEN's Safe Spaces Toolkit and Ready, Set, Respect! curriculum (expectation of CREC elementary curriculum) will be provided. Please bring a laptop to this session.
