Assistive Technology and Systematic Reading Instruction Overview: Incorporating Assistive Technology into Systematic, Explicit Instruction in Reading
Systematic reading instruction explicitly teaches basic reading skills in a way that is beneficial for all students. This type of instruction has been found to be especially beneficial for students who have difficulty learning sound/symbol association, decoding skills, reading accuracy and automaticity. Assistive technology allows students with more significant needs to participate in this type of instruction with greater independence and success.
Objectives
1. Participants will learn the essential elements of systematic reading instruction. 2. Participants will learn apps and extensions that can be used to support systematic reading instruction. 3. Participants will explore apps and extensions on iOS and Chrome platforms that support basic reading skill development.
