UPLIFT: Compassionate Leadership: Paving the Way for Trauma-Informed Schools
The purpose of this module is to ensure that leadership and invested educators are well prepared to support their school/district in developing the skills to better recognize and support individuals who are impacted by trauma. Foundations of Trauma-Informed Care is strongly recommended as a prerequisite, as it is expected that participants will already have an understanding of the potential repercussions of trauma and toxic stress on brain development, and resultant implications for learning, academic achievement, engagement, and social success. Through a combination of direct instruction, conversation, and learning activities, this workshop highlights the role that leaders have in sustained implementation of TIC strategies to positively impact not only students, but staff and caregivers as well. This module includes introduction and guidance on how to utilize tools provided via the RESC Alliance UPLIFT: Trauma-Informed Care Training Program, identifies benefits and challenges of implementing a trauma informed approach, supports action planning and goal identification, tracking of progress toward identified goals, and reporting successes along the way.

UPLIFT: Fostering Physical and Psychological Safety
In this module, participants will learn about the key components of physical and psychological safety to identify ways to strengthen these critical domains of well-being for students, staff and families. A review of the stress response, its relationship to feelings of safety, and its impact on our availability to new learning, problem-solving, and self-regulation will be provided. Participants will reflect on traditional practices targeting physical safety in schools (e.g., active supervision, predictability and routines, fire drills, lockdowns), and expand their understanding of a safe, trauma- informed environment. Participants will engage in discussions and activities that explore how routines, norms, consistency, and predictability can help build a sense of safety for students and staff alike. Participants will learn the key components of psychological safety, with a specific focus on the sequence of engagement, including co-regulation and relationship building. Actions and practices that school leaders and staff can use to increase physical and psychological safety will be identified. Utilizing a case study, participants will explore how to replace less effective negative consequences with natural consequences and/or restorative practices that more sustainably establish feelings of safety for students, staff and families.

UPLIFT: Prioritizing Trustworthiness & Transparency
Individuals who have experienced toxic stress and/or trauma often struggle to trust others, accept support, and/or take risks in learning. This may be true for our students, staff and/or families/caregivers. This module emphasizes how effective communication and a commitment to transparency and inclusion in decision-making are essential in establishing a school climate that supports all individuals in the system (e.g., students, staff and families). Discussion will focus on how to build a culture of trust, authenticity, and honesty. Particular emphasis will be on identifying communication and relationship-building strategies that facilitate productive problem-solving during courageous or difficult conversations. When we experience compassionate and dependable relationships, we re-establish trusting connections with others that foster healing and growth. This module will focus on actions and practices that school leaders and staff utilize to build schools and relationships that prioritize trust and transparency.

UPLIFT: Foundations of Trauma-Informed Care
This foundational module is intended to build awareness and support staff at any level in recognizing trauma and responding to individuals who have been exposed to adverse experiences and/or trauma. It is expected that participants will develop competency around defining and discussing trauma and common trauma symptoms, as well as implications that trauma and toxic stress can have on behaviors presented at home, in school, or in the community. UPLIFT: Empowerment, Voice, and Choice for All
Empowering students, staff and caregivers by giving them voice and choice is crucial in developing trauma-informed schools. When students feel valued and have a sense of agency in their learning environment it has a profound impact on their ability to heal from trauma, develop resilience, and thrive academically. Through discussion and activities, participants will learn how empowerment cultivates a sense of ownership and control, builds self-confidence, validates lived experience, fosters critical thinking skills and strengthens classrooms and communities. When a school is working to empower students and staff, it is critical that opportunities are embedded into daily practices and feedback is utilized in a meaningful, goal-oriented fashion.
