UPLIFT Trauma-Informed Care Practice Series: Harnessing Resilience Through Peer Support
Peer support can be an effective means of fostering resilience in individuals and systems when interventions are implemented intentionally. In this module, participants will explore how trauma-informed peer support programs can become protective factors that mitigate the impact of negative messages received through traumatic or retraumatizing experiences. This module focuses on steps for building trauma-informed peer support programs that build on shared experiences and foster mutually supportive relationships. Specific strategies for students, staff, and caregiver-focused peer support programs and practices will be explored. Additionally, strategies will be provided to increase self-care capacity for individuals that choose to provide support to others.
Goals (appears on the evaluation form):
•Define and describe SAMHSA’ Concept of Trauma as it relates to Peer Support.•Describe how peer support can be an effective means of fostering resilience in individuals who have experienced trauma.•Identify and implement strategies and techniques that increase opportunities for peer support and fostering resilience.•Identify and implement strategies to increase the capacity for supporting individuals who are providing support to their peers.
