A Review of the Peer Support Pathways for Substance Use Disorder
I will review my personal story as an example of building an individual recovery program that combined ideas from multiple sources and multiple peer support programs. Next, I will review the Peer Alternatives for Addiction study, which found that several of these peer support options are as effective as AA. I will provide data as to the variety of religions and the large and increasing percentage of religious Nones in America, as well as the benefit of allowing individuals to make decisions about mental health treatment. I will lay out the philosophy and meeting format for AA, LifeRing Secular Recovery, SMART Recovery, Dharma Recovery, She Recovers Foundation, and Women for Sobriety. I will include the different meeting options for each organization, such as separate meetings for members who fall into the categories of women, BIPOC, LGBTQIA, disabled, veterans, mothers, and others. I will discuss the benefits and limitations of meetings that are in person, online, and hybrid, including the impact on those living with a disability. I will review the obstacles to choosing options other than 12-steps. And I will provide a list of questions that can be used to determine which group(s) might be the best option for a specific individual. I will leave 15 minutes for a Question and Answer session.
Objectives (appears on the evaluation form):
Attendees will learn about:- the multiple peer support options for substance use disorder recovery and an approach to determine the best option(s).- building a personalized substance use disorder recovery plan and the benefits of such a plan.- the Peer Alternatives for Addiction Study and why this reinforces the need to inform those seeking recovery of the many available peer support options.
