Thinking Beyond the Core Four: Trauma-Informed FBAs
Functional behavior assessments are traditionally anchored in the “core four” functions of escape, attention-seeking, access, and/or sensory attenuation, and focus on extrinsic variables in the environment that reinforce student behavior. Trauma responses often result in a student demonstrating behaviors that are automatic and/or not explicitly connected to the current environment, which can make ABC data challenging to collect and/or interpret. This training seeks to expand our thinking of the “core four,” and consider the interplay between both intrinsic and extrinsic variables. Participants will learn the six principles of trauma-informed care, and begin to identify ways to apply this framework to the FBA process, whether in the information gathering, data collection or reporting phase. 2 Learning CEUs will be available for BCBA participants
