Building Skills to Achieve Better Outcomes for Students: Utilizing A Behavior Skills Training Approach to Staff and Parent Training
Behavior analysts are often required to work with classroom staff, related service staff, and parents of students to teach skills specific to teaching skills or managing behavior of children with disabilities. An approach that has proved effective for this purpose is behavioral skills training. Behavioral skills training is an evidenced based strategy to increase skills related to behavior change interventions. Behavioral skills training utilizes a performance- and competency-based approach in addition to vocal and written instruction. After specific skills are selected for training, specific training procedures are outlined, including providing instruction, modeling performance of desired skills, guided rehearsal with the participant, and the provision of specific feedback about the performance of the skill. This workshop will provide an overview of evidence based practices related to behavioral skills training and discussion of how these practices can be utilized in a public school setting. Participants will work together to develop a sample plan for teaching a skill to a staff member or parent through a behavioral skills training approach.Presented by Dr. Christine Peck2 Learning CEUs will be available for BCBA participants
