UPLIFT: Trauma-Informed Staff & System Wellness
May 1, 2024
The wellness of our adults reflects the wellness of our youth; supporting adults in the current educational climate is a critical element of the process of schools becoming trauma-informed. Some might argue that adult wellness should be prioritized, given the unparalleled challenges that our educators and school staff have encountered in recent years. This module examines the impact that toxic stress and/or secondary traumatic stress have on school employees, and how this affects their motivation, sense of accomplishment and effectiveness in their personal and professional lives. While some of the common barriers to self- and community-care (co-care) are addressed, highlighted are the positive impacts made when schools and districts prioritize staff wellness and resilience. This module provides an understanding of the multi-faceted impacts of trauma, and offers resources for promoting whole-building and/or district practices that support staff in a) identifying signs of stress in themselves and others, b) developing strategies that are meaningful for their personal and professional lives, and c) contributing to a school climate that is centered in trusting relationships, shared responsibility, collaboration and co-care.
