Dine & Discuss for CREC Teachers: Examining Student Work in Grades 3 – 8, Reading and Writing
“Examining student work helps to surface and challenge many assumptions –assumptions about what students can and cannot do, about which students can do what, and about why students are or are not able to do something.” Data Wise, p96. In keeping with the Data Wise process teachers will learn about protocols for analyzing student work in order to:1.Identify areas of strength and challenges in the student work2.Develop a shared understanding of the knowledge and skills students need3.Develop common language about a learner-centered problem4.Craft language for a learner-centered problemTeachers are invited to bring a set of student work to examine with a team of colleagues using a protocol. Teachers will have the opportunity to practice the basic guidelines of examining student work including:?Stay focused on evidence that is present in the work.?Observe and describe before judging.?Link conclusions to evidence.?Look openly and broadly; don’t let expectations or perceptions based on behavior cloud your vision.?Look for clues about what and how students are thinking.?Speak about the student and the student’s work as if the student’s parents are in the room.?Match the purpose to the protocol.Teams of two are more teachers are encouraged to attend together and bring work such as reading notebooks, writing notebooks, writing drafts, open-ended response writing, post-it notes.
