Early Childhood Special Education Referral Process and Comprehensive Evaluations

Referrals for Special Education Evaluation in Early Childhood should contain relevant, authentic information, including parent input. Comprehensive Special Education Evaluations in the Early Childhood Setting often look different from older grade levels because of the lack of information regarding the child’s performance in the curriculum. Often there is limited progress monitoring data from other sources. Comprehensive Special Education Evaluations in Early Childhood require training and specialized experience in understanding family dynamics, culture, the impact of a lack of socialization with peers, developmentally appropriate curriculum, high quality early childhood learning environments, and the ability to conduct cross analyses of performance from multiple sources of data. Knowledge of assessment and evaluation tools and techniques are also required to prevent detrimental decisions that result in misinterpretation of assessment and evaluation data.
Objectives
This workshop will provide: •A foundation and framework for appropriate referrals to special education evaluation and comprehensive evaluations •Evaluation methods and tools for early childhood evaluation teams •Processes for conducting accurate cross analyses of assessment and evaluation information •Guidance for professional, yet parent friendly report writing

·   Workshop registration does not include breakfast or lunch. Please feel free to bring your own food and beverage or visit the CREC Central Café (111 Charter Oak Ave.) which offers a variety of breakfast and lunch options with daily specials.

·   Bring a refillable water bottle and/or beverage.

·   Bring a laptop or other electronic device (some workshops require only laptop) for note taking and access to online resources.

·   Please arrive 10 minutes prior to the start of the workshop.

·   Sometimes workshop room temperatures can vary so we suggest you dress in layers.
