Assessing English Learners at the Secondary Level
Sponsored by Access & Advocacy for ELs PL Series
In this session, participants will learn how to equitably assess and grade English learners (ELs) in the secondary classroom based on research-based criteria. By examining assessments with the guidelines of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), the stages of English language acquisition, and equal access in mind, participants will evaluate the ways in which they have previously developed and delivered assessments and consider new access points. Participants are encouraged to come in teams (e.g., secondary classroom teacher, coach/department chair, ESL teacher, administrator).
Objectives
Participants will increase their capacity to use the CELP Standards effectively, create assessments that allow ELs to demonstrate their learning, advocate for needs of ELs, and develop appropriate supports and accommodations for ELs.
