HS ELA: Making the Grade-Creating Student-led, Feedback Driven ELA Classrooms
How can we create ELA classrooms that are truly student-led and in which learners receive invaluable, ongoing feedback about their learning without overburdening teachers with massive correcting piles? In this session, ELA 9-12 participants will consider “rigor” as an essential quality that drives lesson planning, delivery, and assessment. Teachers will work to consider what rigor actually means in the Common Core and within CREC and work to create a definition of rigor that helps them conceptualize and create challenging, higher-order tasks and routines for their students. Participants will also tackle the question of feedback and how to provide meaningful information to students about their learning in ways other than collecting and correcting student work. Teachers will emerge with clarified conceptions of rigor, increased efficacy in their abilities to plan and execute rigorous lessons, and tools to provide meaningful feedback not predicated on collecting physical student work. Please bring your laptop and 2-3 samples from the same assignment of recent student work. **PLEASE NOTE, this session is a nut free environment.**

MS Reading Intervention: Administering the Benchmark Assessment System and Interpreting the Results to Plan for Instruction
Secondary reading interventionists will be trained in these resources to assess students’ reading abilities and provide instruction at an appropriate level. These resources include the Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System and the Leveled Literacy Intervention System for grades 4-12, also developed by Fountas and Pinnell. The Leveled Literacy Intervention System is a “rigorous, small-group, supplementary literacy intervention designed for students who find reading and writing difficult.” Fountas and Pinnell are world renowned researchers in the field of literacy and reading difficulties. For middle and high school students they have identified 15 key characteristics of effective literacy intervention and have included them in this intervention program. Depending on the student’s need a single small-group lesson will include practice in word study, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and writing. Each school will receive one assessment kit and one intervention kit at the professional development on January 29th for secondary interventionists. Please bring a laptop to this session.

OT/PT PM: Why It Matters and How We Teach It - Enhance Literacy Acquisition by Integrating Handwriting Instruction into Your PK-5 Classroom
Wifi Access at UHMS: CREC Employees should use the “UHMS” wireless connection for CREC issued laptops and tablets. (Network-UHMS; Password-Wlan343!). Non CREC employees and everyone’s personal equipment should use “UHMS Guest.” Any personal equipment on the UHMS network connection will be blocked (Network-UHMS Guest; Password-guest818*). Research demonstrates that there is a clear link between handwriting and literacy development. In this interactive make-and-take workshop, participants will: • Explore the connection between basic handwriting skills and reading and math achievement. • Learn strategies and tips to engage students. • Discover where and how cursive “fits in.” • Develop the confidence to teach the basics of handwriting—both manuscript and cursive—in under 15 minutes a day. Participants will explore strategies developed by the Zaner-Bloser Handwriting Collaborative of Educators and Occupational Therapists. Opportunities will be provided to try out activities targeting the development of pencil grasp, line production; along with fine motor activities to develop hand strength and dexterity; and visual motor activities to improve motor planning for printing. The activities have been developed for whole group and/or small group instruction. The Zaner-Bloser method is a developmentally-appropriate, research- based, multi-sensory (auditory, visual and kinesthetic) instructional plan that meets the needs of most learners.
